Al-Falaq

Al-Falaq (Arabic: ٱلْفَلَق) is the 113th chapter (sūrah) of the Quran. It is a short, five-verse surah classified as a Meccan surah, meaning it is believed to have been revealed to Muhammad in Mecca.

Al-Falaq is one of the two Mu'awwidhatayn, the other being Surah An-Nas (Chapter 114). These two surahs are often recited together as a form of protection from evil and harm.

The word "Al-Falaq" itself translates to "the daybreak" or "the cleaving of the dawn." The surah invokes God (Allah) as the Lord of the Daybreak, seeking refuge in Him from various forms of evil:

  • Evil of created things (min sharri ma khalaq)
  • Evil of the night when it darkens (wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqab)
  • Evil of those who blow upon knots (wa min sharri an-naffathati fil-'uqad) – often interpreted as sorcerers or witches engaging in harmful magic by blowing on knots tied to symbolize their target.
  • Evil of the envier when he envies (wa min sharri hasidin idha hasad)

Therefore, Surah Al-Falaq is understood as a supplication for divine protection from the evil found in creation, the darkness of night, malevolent magic, and the harm caused by envy. The surah is commonly recited for protection against negative influences and to seek refuge in God's power and authority.
