Afflicted (band)
Afflicted was a Swedish death metal band formed in 1988 under the name RIPPED. They are notable for featuring Jesper Strömblad on guitar before his involvement with In Flames.
The band's early sound was heavily influenced by bands such as Entombed and Dismember, showcasing a raw and brutal approach to Swedish death metal. After several lineup changes and demo recordings as RIPPED, they solidified their lineup and changed their name to Afflicted in 1990.
Under the Afflicted moniker, they released two full-length albums: Prodigal Sun (1992) and Dawn of Glory (1995), both released through Nuclear Blast Records. Prodigal Sun is considered a classic of the Swedish death metal scene, showcasing technical proficiency and a distinctive atmosphere. Dawn of Glory continued in a similar vein, though it perhaps didn't achieve the same level of critical acclaim as its predecessor.
Afflicted disbanded in 1996. While they were active for a relatively short period, their contribution to the early Swedish death metal scene is recognized by fans and critics alike. Jesper Strömblad's involvement adds historical significance to the band's legacy, linking them to the Gothenburg sound that would later become internationally renowned.
