Armazi (god)

Armazi was the chief deity in the pantheon of ancient Iberia (Kartli, present-day Georgia). He is generally considered a solar deity and a sky god, likely derived from or influenced by Zoroastrian Ahura Mazda, or potentially related to the Anatolian god Arma.

The worship of Armazi was central to Iberian religious life, particularly during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. A monumental temple dedicated to Armazi stood in the capital city of the Kingdom of Iberia, also named Armazi, located near modern-day Mtskheta. Archaeological excavations at the site have revealed evidence of a rich and complex religious cult, including statuary and other artifacts.

Historical accounts, such as those found in the Georgian chronicles, detail the importance of Armazi in the royal cult. Iberian kings sought the favor of Armazi and associated their rule with the god's power. The chronicles also mention the destruction of the idol of Armazi during the Christianization of Iberia in the 4th century AD by St. Nino.

While direct information on the specific rituals and myths associated with Armazi is limited, it is understood that he was a prominent figure associated with kingship, war, and the protection of the Iberian realm. His significance declined with the spread of Christianity, leading to the suppression of his worship and the eventual abandonment of his temple.
