90th Infantry Division (United States)

The 90th Infantry Division ("Tough Ombres") was a unit of the United States Army that served in both World War I and World War II. It was initially formed during World War I from draftees from Texas and Oklahoma, hence the nickname "Texas-Oklahoma Division."

World War I:

Activated in August 1917, the 90th Infantry Division arrived in France in June 1918. They trained with British and French forces before entering combat in the St. Mihiel offensive in September 1918. The division then participated in the Meuse-Argonne offensive, playing a significant role in heavy fighting. After the Armistice, the division remained in Europe until May 1919, returning to the United States and being demobilized.

World War II:

The 90th Infantry Division was reactivated in March 1942 at Camp Barkeley, Texas. After extensive training in the United States and the United Kingdom, the division landed on Utah Beach in Normandy, France, on D-Day, June 6, 1944. They subsequently fought through Normandy, participating in the Battle of the Hedgerows. The division was involved in heavy fighting around Mortain, helping to stem the German counterattack. The 90th then advanced through France, participating in the Lorraine campaign and the Battle of the Bulge. They crossed the Saar River into Germany in March 1945 and continued to advance, helping to encircle and capture the Ruhr Pocket. The division played a role in the liberation of the Flossenbürg concentration camp. After the German surrender, the 90th Infantry Division performed occupation duties in Czechoslovakia before returning to the United States and being deactivated in December 1945.

Post World War II:

The 90th Infantry Division was later reactivated as a reserve division.
