404th Tactical Airlift Tanker Squadron (JASDF)
The 404th Tactical Airlift Tanker Squadron is a unit of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF). It operates as a component of the JASDF's air transport and aerial refueling capabilities. The squadron is primarily equipped with KC-767J aerial refueling tankers, which are modified Boeing 767 aircraft.
The 404th Squadron's primary mission is to extend the operational range and endurance of JASDF aircraft, including fighter jets, transport aircraft, and other support aircraft, through in-flight refueling. This capability is crucial for enhancing Japan's air defense posture and enabling long-range deployments for training and operational purposes.
Beyond aerial refueling, the KC-767J aircraft also retain cargo and passenger carrying capabilities, allowing the 404th Squadron to contribute to tactical airlift missions as needed. These missions can include the transportation of personnel, equipment, and supplies in support of various JASDF operations and humanitarian aid efforts.
The squadron is stationed at Komaki Air Base, near Nagoya, Japan. The 404th plays a significant role in maintaining the JASDF's operational readiness and its ability to project power and respond to contingencies both domestically and internationally.
