226th Battalion (Men of the North), CEF

The 226th Battalion (Men of the North), CEF (Canadian Expeditionary Force), was an infantry battalion of the Canadian Army during the First World War. Authorized on July 15, 1916, it was raised in Northern Ontario and mobilized at Haileybury, Ontario.

The battalion drew its recruits primarily from the northern regions of Ontario, hence the designation "Men of the North." After a period of training in Canada, the 226th Battalion embarked for Great Britain on May 1, 1917, aboard the SS Olympic.

Upon arrival in England, the 226th Battalion was absorbed into the 8th Reserve Battalion on May 13, 1917. The battalion did not serve as a distinct fighting unit on the Western Front. Its personnel were used as reinforcements for other Canadian units already engaged in combat in France and Belgium.

The 226th Battalion was disbanded on September 15, 1920.

The perpetuation of the 226th Battalion was assigned to the The Algonquin Regiment.
