1st Division (Spain)
The 1st Division, also known as Primera División (Spanish for First Division) or La Liga EA Sports for sponsorship reasons, is the top professional football division of the Spanish football league system. Administered by the Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional (National Professional Football League), it is contested by 20 teams, with the three lowest-placed teams relegated to the Segunda División (Second Division) and replaced by the top three teams from that division.
Established in 1929, La Liga is one of the most popular and successful football leagues in the world. It has produced numerous world-class players and clubs, including Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, who are consistently ranked among the top teams globally. The league operates on a promotion and relegation system with the Segunda División, ensuring constant change and competition.
The season typically runs from August to May, with teams playing each other twice in a round-robin format – once at their home stadium and once at their opponent's. Points are awarded as follows: three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. At the end of the season, the team with the most points is crowned champion.
In addition to the championship title, the top teams in La Liga qualify for various European competitions, such as the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League. The precise number of qualifying teams varies according to UEFA regulations.
La Liga has a significant global following, with matches broadcast in numerous countries. Its rich history, competitive nature, and the presence of world-class players contribute to its popularity and status as one of the leading football leagues in the world. Historical records, including champions and top goalscorers, are maintained and readily available from various sources.
