1988 U.S. Open (golf)
The 1988 U.S. Open was the 88th U.S. Open, held June 16–20 at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. Curtis Strange won his first major championship, defeating Nick Faldo in an 18-hole playoff.
The tournament was notable for several reasons. It marked the third U.S. Open held at The Country Club, following the 1913 and 1963 editions. The course, known for its challenging layout and undulating greens, proved to be a difficult test for the field.
Strange and Faldo finished the 72 holes tied at six-under-par, forcing a Monday playoff. In the playoff, Strange shot an even-par 71, while Faldo struggled to a 75, giving Strange a four-stroke victory.
Several other notable players were in contention throughout the tournament, including Seve Ballesteros and Chip Beck. However, neither was able to sustain their challenge through the final rounds. The 1988 U.S. Open is remembered as a hard-fought championship and a significant victory in Curtis Strange's career.
