Cyclone Sarai

Cyclone Sarai was a tropical cyclone that impacted Fiji in late December 2019. It formed as a tropical disturbance northeast of Fiji and gradually intensified into a Category 1 tropical cyclone as it moved southwestward. Sarai brought heavy rainfall, strong winds, and flooding to many parts of Fiji, including the main islands of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.

The cyclone resulted in widespread damage to homes, infrastructure, and crops. Power outages were common, and many roads were blocked by landslides and flooding. Several evacuation centers were opened to accommodate those displaced by the storm.

While Sarai caused significant disruption and damage, there were no reported fatalities directly attributed to the cyclone. The Fijian government and various aid organizations worked to provide relief and support to affected communities in the aftermath of the storm. The cyclone eventually weakened and dissipated after moving away from Fiji. The event highlighted the vulnerability of Fiji and other Pacific island nations to the impacts of tropical cyclones and the importance of disaster preparedness and mitigation efforts.
