1976 U.S. Open (golf)

The 1976 U.S. Open was the 76th U.S. Open, held June 17–20 at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Duluth, Georgia, a suburb northeast of Atlanta. Dave Stockton won his first U.S. Open title, two strokes ahead of runners-up Raymond Floyd and Don January.

The Atlanta Athletic Club's Highlands Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, proved to be a challenging test for the field. The course played long and the greens were notoriously difficult to read.

Stockton entered the final round one stroke behind third-round leader Jerry Pate. Pate struggled on Sunday, shooting a final round 77. Stockton carded a final round 70, one of only three under-par rounds on Sunday, to secure the victory.

Notable players in the field included Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, and defending champion Lou Graham. Nicklaus finished tied for tenth, while Watson finished tied for 16th. Graham missed the cut.

The tournament is also remembered for its extremely hot and humid conditions, which took a toll on many of the players.
