155th Division (Imperial Japanese Army)
The 155th Division (第155師団, Dai 155 Shidan) was an infantry division of the Imperial Japanese Army. Its call sign was the Seishu Division (盛秋兵団, Seishu Heidan).
It was formed on February 28, 1945, in Jining, Shandong Province, China, as part of the 151st, 152nd, and 153rd series of rapid-deployment divisions intended to bolster Japan's defenses against a potential Allied invasion (Operation Downfall). The 155th Division was a triangular division, meaning it was based on a reinforced infantry regiment rather than the standard infantry brigade.
The division was assigned to the Jinan Independent Garrison Group of the North China Area Army. As such, it was primarily responsible for garrison duties and internal security in the Shandong region of China.
The 155th Division was composed of the following units:
- 14th Independent Mixed Regiment
- 15th Independent Mixed Regiment
- 16th Independent Mixed Regiment
- 155th Division Artillery Regiment
- 155th Division Engineer Unit
- 155th Division Transportation Unit
The division saw limited combat action before the surrender of Japan in August 1945. Following the surrender, the division was disarmed and demobilized in China by the Chinese Nationalist forces. The personnel were repatriated to Japan after a period of detention.
