Þingeyri
Þingeyri is a village in the Westfjords region of Iceland. It is located on the Dýrafjörður fjord, one of the southernmost of the large fjords in the region. Administratively, Þingeyri is part of the Ísafjarðarbær municipality.
Historically, Þingeyri was an important trading post and served as a center for the surrounding agricultural area. The name "Þingeyri" translates roughly to "Assembly Sandspit," referencing its historical role as a meeting place or þing (assembly).
The village is characterized by its picturesque location, surrounded by steep mountains and the waters of the fjord. While relatively small, Þingeyri boasts a church, a hotel, and a few other services catering to locals and tourists. Fishing and tourism are important industries for the community.
Þingeyri provides access to hiking trails and opportunities for outdoor recreation in the Westfjords. The region is known for its dramatic scenery, diverse birdlife, and relatively remote and unspoiled character. The Westfjords Heritage Museum, located in nearby Bolungarvík, provides historical context to the region, including Þingeyri.
