Xis (sandwich)
The xis is a type of sandwich popular in Southern Brazil, particularly in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. It is characterized by its large size and a variety of fillings, typically served on a toasted baguette-style bread.
The basic xis usually includes steak or hamburger, fried egg, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise. However, a wide range of additional ingredients are often added, such as bacon, ham, sausage, chicken, corn, peas, olives, and various sauces. Due to the extensive list of possible ingredients, the xis can be highly customizable and vary significantly in composition and flavor.
The name "xis" is derived from the Portuguese pronunciation of the letter "X," reflecting the visual shape of the sandwich when cut in half. Xis sandwiches are often sold at lancherias (snack bars) and food trucks, making them a common and readily available street food option. Their generous size makes them a popular choice for a substantial meal.
