Wither (film)
Wither is a 2012 Swedish horror film directed by Sonny Laguna and Tommy Wiklund. The film is a splatter film focused on a group of young adults who travel to a remote cabin in the woods and inadvertently awaken an ancient and malevolent creature dwelling beneath the floorboards.
The plot centers around Albin and Ida, a couple who invite their friends to celebrate at a supposedly abandoned cabin in the Swedish wilderness. Unbeknownst to them, the cabin is built atop a burial ground for victims of a long-forgotten pagan ritual. After Albin accidentally breaks a seal, a demonic force is unleashed, possessing and transforming one of their friends into a bloodthirsty monster. The survivors must then fight to survive the night against the increasingly aggressive and grotesque creature.
Wither is known for its graphic violence and practical special effects. It draws inspiration from classic cabin-in-the-woods horror films such as The Evil Dead and Cabin Fever, utilizing similar tropes of isolation, demonic possession, and extreme gore. While not critically acclaimed, it has garnered a cult following within the horror community for its dedication to old-school splatter techniques and its unapologetic commitment to intense horror. The film aims for a raw and visceral viewing experience, prioritizing shock value and grotesque imagery over nuanced storytelling.
