William Spence (architect)
William Spence (1806-1883) was a Scottish architect based in Glasgow. He is best known for his church designs, executed primarily in a Gothic Revival style.
Spence began his career working with the architectural firm of David Hamilton in Glasgow. He later established his own independent practice. He was responsible for the design of numerous churches throughout Scotland, including Free Church of Scotland and United Presbyterian churches. His architectural style generally favored the Early English Gothic style.
Beyond church architecture, Spence also designed a variety of other buildings, including domestic residences and commercial properties. While he designed many buildings, his church designs are generally considered to be his most significant contribution to Scottish architectural history.
