William Mason (1757–1818)

William Mason (1757–1818) was an American physician and educator. He is primarily remembered for his role in the early development of medical education in the United States, particularly at the Columbia College (now Columbia University) medical school.

Born in New York City, Mason graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1774. He then pursued medical studies, eventually earning his medical degree. He was appointed Professor of Materia Medica and Botany at Columbia College in 1792, a position he held for a considerable period.

Mason's contributions to the medical school included not only teaching but also his involvement in the organization and administration of the institution. He was an active member of the medical community in New York City and played a part in shaping the curriculum and standards of medical education during a crucial period of its evolution. His lectures and expertise in botany provided valuable insights into the sources and properties of medicinal plants.

While overshadowed by some of his more famous contemporaries, Mason's dedication to medical education and his contributions to Columbia College made him a significant figure in the history of American medicine. He died in New York City in 1818.
