Plan of Veracruz (1822)

The Plan of Veracruz was a declaration issued in December 1822, challenging the imperial authority of Agustín de Iturbide, the Emperor of Mexico. It was led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna, initially a supporter of Iturbide's rise to power. The Plan called for the re-establishment of the Congress that Iturbide had dissolved and demanded a new constituent congress be formed to create a republican form of government. It also advocated for adherence to the Plan de Iguala and the Treaties of Córdoba, principles of independence and established rights that Iturbide was accused of violating through his autocratic rule. The Plan of Veracruz marked a significant turning point in the early history of independent Mexico, leading to Iturbide's abdication in 1823 and the establishment of a republic.
