Wabowden
Wabowden is a community located in northern Manitoba, Canada. It lies along Provincial Trunk Highway 6, approximately 32 kilometers (20 miles) south of Thompson. Wabowden is situated on the Grass River, known for its rapids and waterfalls, which historically provided a transportation route for fur traders.
The community's economy is primarily supported by mining and related industries in the Thompson area. Wabowden also serves as a service center for the surrounding region.
Wabowden has a population of approximately 300 people. It includes a school, a general store, and other basic services. The community is also accessible by rail via the Hudson Bay Railway.
The name "Wabowden" is derived from a Cree word referring to the rapids on the Grass River. These rapids were significant to Indigenous peoples who utilized the river system for travel and sustenance for centuries prior to European settlement.
