WVLT-TV
WVLT-TV is the CBS-affiliated television station serving Knoxville, Tennessee, and the surrounding East Tennessee region. It broadcasts a high-definition digital signal on VHF channel 8 (virtual channel 8.1). The station is owned by Gray Television.
WVLT-TV's studios are located on Papermill Drive in Knoxville, and its transmitter is located on Sharps Ridge, also in Knoxville. The station's coverage area includes the Knoxville metropolitan area, as well as several surrounding counties in East Tennessee.
WVLT-TV began broadcasting on February 23, 1953, as WTSK-TV, owned by Tennessee Television, Inc. It was the first television station in Knoxville. Initially, it carried programming from all four major networks of the time: CBS, NBC, ABC, and DuMont. In 1955, the station became a primary CBS affiliate.
Over the years, the station has undergone several ownership changes and call sign changes. It was known as WTVK from 1955 to 1981, WATE-TV from 1981 to 1988, and finally WVLT-TV in 1988.
WVLT-TV broadcasts a variety of programming, including CBS network shows, syndicated programs, and local news. The station's local news coverage includes news, weather, and sports reports for the Knoxville area. WVLT-TV also produces local public affairs programming. The station's weather coverage is branded as "Storm Team 8."
