Verbindungsbahn (Vienna)
The Verbindungsbahn, often translated as "Connecting Railway," is a double-track railway line in Vienna, Austria. It connects the Wien Hauptbahnhof (Vienna Main Station) with the Wien Meidling station, two of the city's most important railway hubs. This line is crucial for the smooth flow of long-distance, regional, and S-Bahn (commuter rail) traffic through Vienna.
The Verbindungsbahn allows trains to bypass the city center and connect various railway lines converging on Vienna. This bypass is particularly important for north-south and east-west rail traffic. Without it, many trains would have to terminate at individual stations, causing significant operational bottlenecks and inconveniencing passengers.
The line primarily runs underground in a tunnel. The tunnel construction aimed to minimize disruption to the cityscape and existing infrastructure.
The Verbindungsbahn plays a vital role in Vienna's integrated public transportation network. Its efficient operation contributes to reduced travel times and improved connectivity for both local commuters and international travelers. The line is operated by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB).
