Vélo'v
Vélo'v is a bicycle sharing system located in Lyon, France. Launched in May 2005, it was one of the first large-scale bicycle sharing programs in the world, predating many similar systems now found globally. The service is operated by Smoove, under contract from the Métropole de Lyon.
Vélo'v allows users to rent bicycles from docking stations located throughout the city. Users can pick up a bike at one station and return it to any other station in the network, facilitating convenient transportation for short trips.
To use Vélo'v, individuals typically subscribe to a membership, allowing them access to the bicycles. Short-term rentals are also often available for tourists or infrequent users. Pricing varies depending on the duration of the subscription or rental.
The bicycles themselves are designed to be durable and easily identifiable, usually featuring a distinctive color scheme and branding. The system aims to promote sustainable transportation, reduce traffic congestion, and provide an affordable and healthy alternative to cars.
Vélo'v has been cited as a model for other bicycle sharing programs around the world and has contributed significantly to Lyon's reputation as a cycling-friendly city.
