Utah Grizzlies (1995–2005)
The Utah Grizzlies (1995–2005) were a professional ice hockey team based in West Valley City, Utah. They competed in the International Hockey League (IHL) from 1995 to 2001 and the American Hockey League (AHL) from 2001 to 2005. The team was initially known as the Denver Grizzlies when it began play in the IHL in 1994, relocating to Utah after one season due to the arrival of the NHL's Colorado Avalanche in Denver.
The Utah Grizzlies won the Turner Cup, the IHL's championship trophy, in their inaugural season in Utah in 1995. Notable players who played for the Grizzlies during this period include Tommy Salo, Kip Miller, and Greg Classen.
In 2001, with the IHL ceasing operations, the Grizzlies joined the AHL. During their time in the AHL, they served as the primary affiliate of the New York Islanders from 2001 to 2003 and then the Calgary Flames from 2003 to 2005.
The franchise was suspended following the 2004–05 AHL season and reactivated as the Lake Erie Monsters (now Cleveland Monsters) in Cleveland, Ohio, for the 2007–08 AHL season. The Utah Grizzlies name was later revived by a separate ECHL franchise.
