Ust-Maya
Ust-Maya is a settlement (urban-type settlement) and the administrative center of Ust-Maysky District in the Sakha Republic, Russia. It is located at the confluence of the Maya River and the Aldan River, about 370 kilometers (230 mi) east-southeast of Yakutsk.
History:
Ust-Maya was founded in 1930 as a river port. Its growth was largely driven by the mining industry and its role as a transportation hub for supplies destined for gold and other mineral extraction sites in the region. It was granted urban-type settlement status in 1938.
Geography:
The settlement sits in a region characterized by taiga forests and a subarctic climate. The surrounding landscape is dominated by the Aldan River valley.
Administrative and Municipal Status:
Ust-Maya serves as the administrative center for Ust-Maysky District. Within the framework of administrative divisions, it is subordinated to Ust-Maysky District. As a municipal division, Ust-Maya is incorporated within Ust-Maysky Municipal District as the Urban Settlement of Ust-Maya.
Economy:
The local economy is primarily based on transportation services related to river shipping, serving the mining industry, and some forestry activities.
Population:
The population of Ust-Maya has fluctuated over time. As of the 2010 Census, its population was recorded at 2,950.
