Uronema (ciliate)

Uronema is a genus of ciliates belonging to the class Oligohymenophorea and the order Scuticociliatida. They are small, free-living protozoans commonly found in marine and freshwater environments, particularly where there is decaying organic matter.

Uronema species are characterized by their small size (typically less than 50 micrometers), oval or slightly elongated shape, and the presence of a conspicuous cytostome (oral groove) located ventrally near the anterior end. They possess numerous somatic cilia arranged in longitudinal rows, which are used for locomotion and feeding.

These ciliates are bacterivores, feeding primarily on bacteria. They play an important role in the microbial loop of aquatic ecosystems, consuming bacteria and making the bacterial biomass available to higher trophic levels. Uronema reproduce asexually through binary fission. Sexual reproduction (conjugation) has also been observed.

Uronema are relatively tolerant to a wide range of environmental conditions, including variations in salinity and temperature. They are often used as indicator species in water quality assessments, as their abundance can be affected by pollution and other environmental stressors. Some species have been implicated in opportunistic infections in aquaculture, particularly affecting fish and other marine organisms.
