Up (2009 film)

Up is a 2009 American computer-animated adventure comedy-drama film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Pete Docter and co-directed by Bob Peterson, the film tells the story of Carl Fredricksen, an elderly widower who ties thousands of helium balloons to his house to fly to South America, fulfilling a lifelong dream he shared with his late wife, Ellie.

The film features the voices of Ed Asner, Christopher Plummer, Bob Peterson, Jordan Nagai, and Elie Docter. The story was conceived by Docter in 2004, based on the idea of escaping from life’s troubles. The film was Pixar's tenth feature film.

Up premiered at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, becoming the first animated film and first 3D film to open the festival. It was released in the United States on May 29, 2009, and received critical acclaim, with praise directed at its animation, story, characters, humor, and Michael Giacchino's musical score. It grossed over $735 million worldwide, becoming the sixth highest-grossing film of 2009.

Up won two Academy Awards, for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score. It was also nominated for Best Picture, making it the second animated film in history to receive that nomination (after Beauty and the Beast). The film is widely regarded as one of Pixar's best and most emotionally resonant works.
