Paklenica

Paklenica refers primarily to two deep canyons, Velika Paklenica (Big Paklenica) and Mala Paklenica (Small Paklenica), located on the southern slopes of the Velebit mountain range, near Starigrad in Croatia. These canyons are the central feature of Paklenica National Park.

Paklenica National Park: A Croatian national park established in 1949, encompassing a significant part of the southern Velebit mountains. Its primary attractions are the dramatic canyons of Velika Paklenica and Mala Paklenica, known for their impressive vertical cliffs.

Velika Paklenica: The larger of the two canyons. It is characterized by its towering rock faces, which are popular among rock climbers. A stream runs through the bottom of the canyon.

Mala Paklenica: The smaller of the two canyons. It is wilder and less accessible than Velika Paklenica. Hiking trails are less developed, and the canyon offers a more rugged experience.

Rock Climbing: Paklenica is one of the most popular rock climbing destinations in Croatia and Southern Europe, attracting climbers from all over the world. The park offers a wide range of climbing routes for all skill levels, from beginner-friendly slabs to challenging multi-pitch climbs.

Hiking: Beyond rock climbing, Paklenica offers numerous hiking trails suitable for various levels of fitness. Trails range from easy walks along the canyon floors to demanding climbs to the highest peaks of Velebit.

Biodiversity: The park boasts rich biodiversity, including diverse flora and fauna, due to its varied terrain and climate. Forests, caves, and rocky habitats provide shelter for many species, including brown bears, lynx, wolves, and various birds of prey.

Geological Significance: The Paklenica canyons are examples of karst topography, shaped by the erosive action of water on limestone rock over millennia. The canyons' formations provide insights into the geological history of the region.
