USS Maumee (1863)

USS Maumee was a Shamokin-class screw steamer built for the United States Navy during the American Civil War. She was named for the Maumee River.

Maumee was launched on 28 April 1863 by the Philadelphia Navy Yard and commissioned on 21 December 1863, Commander Ralph Chandler in command.

After commissioning, Maumee was assigned to the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron, where she served primarily in patrolling the waters off the coasts of Georgia and Florida. Her duties involved intercepting Confederate blockade runners attempting to bring supplies into and out of Southern ports.

In June 1864, Maumee participated in the capture of several blockade runners. She continued her blockading duties until the end of the Civil War in April 1865.

Following the war, Maumee was decommissioned and placed in ordinary. She was later sold at public auction on 15 October 1867. Her subsequent career as a merchant vessel is largely undocumented.
