USS Harding (DD-625)

The USS Harding (DD-625) was a Gleaves-class destroyer of the United States Navy. Named for Seth Harding, a captain in the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War, she was commissioned on November 20, 1942.

During World War II, Harding served primarily in the Atlantic theater. Her duties included escorting convoys, anti-submarine patrols, and participating in the invasion of Normandy. She played a crucial role in protecting Allied shipping lanes from German U-boats.

Specifically, Harding was involved in multiple convoy escort duties across the Atlantic, providing crucial protection against U-boat attacks. She also participated in the screening of larger warships during fleet operations.

On June 6, 1944, D-Day, Harding participated in the naval bombardment of German coastal defenses in support of the Allied landings. Her guns provided critical fire support to the troops landing on Utah Beach.

After the war, Harding continued to serve with the U.S. Navy for a short period before being decommissioned on November 2, 1945. She was subsequently scrapped. The USS Harding earned one battle star for her service during World War II.

The USS Harding's service reflects the vital role destroyers played in World War II, protecting vital shipping lanes and providing critical support to amphibious landings.
