USS Dayton (CL-105)

USS Dayton (CL-105) was a ''Cleveland''-class light cruiser of the United States Navy. Named for Dayton, Ohio, she was laid down on 28 June 1942 at the New York Shipbuilding Corporation, Camden, New Jersey; launched on 21 February 1943; sponsored by Mrs. James M. Cox; and commissioned on 26 October 1943, Captain R. P. Briscoe in command.

Following shakedown, the ''Dayton'' joined the Pacific Fleet and participated in numerous operations during World War II. Her service included participation in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the invasion of Iwo Jima, and the Okinawa campaign. She provided fire support for amphibious landings and conducted anti-aircraft defense. The ship was credited with shooting down several enemy aircraft.

Post-war, the ''Dayton'' served in the occupation of Japan and participated in various post-war operations in the Pacific. She was decommissioned on 21 June 1946 and placed in the reserve fleet. Later, she was sold for scrap in 1959.
