Tinakula

Tinakula is a stratovolcano located in the Solomon Islands, specifically within the Temotu Province. It is the southernmost volcano in the Santa Cruz Islands group. Tinakula is almost perfectly cone-shaped and rises steeply from the sea floor. The island is roughly circular, with a diameter of approximately 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles).

The volcano is highly active and has been known to erupt periodically, often with explosive eruptions that can pose a threat to surrounding islands and shipping lanes. These eruptions typically involve ash plumes, pyroclastic flows, and lava flows. The island is largely uninhabited due to the ongoing volcanic activity and the lack of freshwater sources. Historical records indicate that the island has been intermittently populated and abandoned due to eruptions.

Geologically, Tinakula is formed by the subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate beneath the Pacific Plate in the Solomon Islands Arc. The magma generated by this subduction feeds the volcano. Its isolation and difficult access have limited detailed scientific study, but it remains an important site for monitoring volcanic activity in the region.
