Clarín (Chilean newspaper)

Clarín was a Chilean tabloid newspaper published in Santiago between 1965 and 1973. Known for its sensationalist style and explicit content, Clarín primarily catered to a working-class audience and was strongly aligned with socialist and leftist political viewpoints.

The newspaper was founded by Darío Nuñez and quickly gained popularity due to its eye-catching headlines, coverage of crime and social issues, and its outspoken support for Salvador Allende and the Popular Unity government. Clarín was often critical of conservative political figures and the wealthy elite.

Clarín's circulation reached its peak in the early 1970s, making it one of the most widely read newspapers in Chile at the time. However, its leftist political stance made it a target after the 1973 military coup led by Augusto Pinochet.

Following the coup on September 11, 1973, Clarín was shut down and its staff members were persecuted, imprisoned, or forced into exile. The newspaper's archives were seized, and its publication was permanently banned by the military regime. Clarín remains a significant, albeit controversial, part of Chilean media history, remembered for its unique style and its role in the polarized political landscape of the Allende era.
