Till (furniture)
A till, in the context of furniture, refers to a drawer or compartment, typically found in desks, tables, or chests. These compartments are often designed for storage of small items, valuables, or documents. The term "till" can also imply a degree of security or privacy associated with the compartment, particularly if it includes a locking mechanism.
Historically, tills were integral parts of furniture design, providing organized storage solutions long before modern modular furniture systems. Their construction varied, ranging from simple, unadorned boxes to intricately crafted drawers with dovetail joints and decorative hardware.
The specific characteristics of a till within a piece of furniture depend on the furniture's intended use and period of manufacture. Antique desks, for example, might feature a series of small tills, sometimes concealed, for storing writing supplies or personal correspondence. Larger tills, like those found in chests, could accommodate clothing or household goods.
In modern furniture, the term "till" is less commonly used; "drawer" or "compartment" are preferred. However, the fundamental function of providing organized storage remains the same.
