Thomas Christie (physician)

Thomas Christie (1761 – 1796) was a Scottish physician, political writer, and translator. He was born in Montrose, Scotland, and received his medical degree from the University of Edinburgh. Christie was a supporter of the French Revolution and wrote extensively in its defense. He gained notoriety for his radical political views and involvement in various political societies. He spent considerable time in France observing the revolutionary events firsthand.

Christie is known for his contributions to political discourse and his advocacy for social reform. His writings often critiqued the British government and championed the ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity. He translated several works from French into English, making important texts related to the Revolution accessible to a wider British audience. He also wrote original essays and pamphlets on political and philosophical topics.

He married Thomas Paine's publisher's daughter in 1792 and died in Surinam in 1796, where he had traveled to improve his financial situation. His premature death cut short a promising career as a political and intellectual figure.
