Thomas Ashton (divine)
Thomas Ashton (born circa 1470, died 1521) was an English cleric and benefactor. He is primarily remembered as the founder of Ashton's Charity, which provided funds for the education of priests at Cambridge University.
Ashton was a chaplain and held various ecclesiastical positions, including prebendary of St. Paul's Cathedral in London. He accumulated significant wealth, which he bequeathed in his will for charitable purposes.
The most notable element of Ashton's will established a fund dedicated to supporting poor scholars studying divinity at Cambridge. This legacy significantly impacted theological education at the university and continued for many years after his death. Details of the original endowment and subsequent changes to the administration of Ashton's Charity can be found in historical records pertaining to Cambridge University and the archives of St. Paul's Cathedral.
