The Sharks (film)

The Sharks (Spanish: Los Tiburones) is a 2019 Uruguayan-Argentine-Spanish coming-of-age drama film written and directed by Lucía Garibaldi. It stars Romina Bentancur as Rosina, a 14-year-old girl living in a small seaside village in Uruguay.

The film follows Rosina as she experiences the unsettling arrival of rumored sharks in her village's waters, coinciding with her own burgeoning sexuality and confusing feelings towards an older, attractive local worker named Joselo. The perceived threat of the sharks acts as a metaphor for the unknown and potentially dangerous aspects of adulthood and desire that Rosina is beginning to confront.

The Sharks premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the World Cinema Dramatic Directing Award. It received generally positive reviews, with critics praising Garibaldi's direction and the film's atmospheric tension and exploration of adolescent themes. The film was also nominated for the Horizontes Award at the 2019 San Sebastián International Film Festival.
