The Four Just Men (TV series)
The Four Just Men was a British television series that aired for one season of 39 episodes from 1959 to 1960. It was based on the 1905 novel The Four Just Men by Edgar Wallace.
The series revolves around four men dedicated to fighting injustice across Europe. Each member has a particular skill set that contributes to their operations. The four men, bound by a pact, take it upon themselves to deliver their own brand of justice, often through unorthodox and sometimes deadly means, when legal avenues fail.
The core group consisted of:
- Ben Manfred, played by Richard Conte
- Tim Collier, played by Dan Dailey
- Riccardo Palli, played by Jack Hawkins
- Jeff Ryder, played by Vittorio De Sica
While the original novel featured a more explicitly violent and morally ambiguous quartet, the television series often softened these aspects, portraying the men as more unambiguously heroic figures fighting against villains such as corrupt officials, criminals, and blackmailers.
The series was an early example of an internationally co-produced television drama, featuring actors and locations from various European countries. It was produced by Sapphire Films for ITC Entertainment. Despite its initial popularity, it was not renewed for a second season.
