The Choir (film)
The Choir, also known as Boychoir, is a 2014 American drama film directed by François Girard and written by Ben Ripley. The film stars Dustin Hoffman, Garrett Wareing, Kathy Bates, Josh Lucas, Debra Winger, and Eddie Izzard.
The film follows Stetson Tate (played by Garrett Wareing), a troubled and rebellious young boy from a small Texas town who possesses an extraordinary singing talent. After his single mother dies, Stet is sent to a prestigious boys choir school on the East Coast, the American Boychoir School, against the wishes of its demanding and respected choirmaster, Anton Carvelle (Dustin Hoffman).
Initially out of place and struggling to adapt to the rigorous discipline and competitive environment, Stet gradually discovers his potential and learns to channel his anger and frustration through music. He faces challenges from both his peers and Carvelle, who is skeptical of his talent and past. Through perseverance and the guidance of supportive faculty members, including Woolly (Kathy Bates), Stet eventually earns a place in the choir and competes to become the lead soloist.
The film explores themes of redemption, self-discovery, the power of music, and the importance of mentorship. It highlights the dedication and artistry required to excel in classical music performance, and portrays the emotional journey of a young boy finding his voice, both literally and figuratively.
