Ted Gup

Ted Gup (born March 2, 1950) is an American author, journalist, and professor known for his investigative reporting and narrative nonfiction. He has written extensively on topics ranging from government secrecy and corruption to personal and family histories.

Gup is perhaps best known for his book Nation of Secrets (2007), which explores the pervasiveness of government secrecy in the United States and its impact on democratic institutions. The book draws on his own experiences as a journalist and his research into the Freedom of Information Act.

Another notable work is The Book of Honor: Covert Lives and Classified Deaths at the CIA (2000), which chronicles the lives and deaths of CIA officers and the secrecy surrounding their missions. The book provides a rare glimpse into the world of espionage and the human cost of intelligence gathering.

Gup's family memoir, Secret Keeper: A Life in Obsessions (2011), delves into the history of his family and the secrets that shaped their lives. The book explores themes of identity, inheritance, and the power of family stories.

He has also written for numerous publications, including The Washington Post, Time, National Geographic, The Nation, and GQ.

Gup has received several awards for his work, including the George Polk Award and the Overseas Press Club Award. He has taught at Princeton University, Georgetown University, and Case Western Reserve University. He currently serves as a professor at Emerson College.
