Swan Dive
A swan dive is a type of dive performed in swimming and diving sports. It is characterized by a distinctive arched body position resembling a swan in flight, performed at the start of the dive.
The dive begins with the diver standing on a platform or diving board. They initiate the movement by extending their arms out to the sides, parallel to the shoulders. As they lean forward, they arch their back, creating a smooth, flowing curve from head to toes. The legs are typically kept straight and together. The diver then enters the water headfirst, aiming for a clean, vertical entry. The arms are usually brought forward and streamlined above the head just before water entry.
The swan dive can be executed as a forward dive or with somersaults or twists. It is also sometimes used as an artistic element within a more complex dive sequence. Judges assess the swan dive based on the diver's form, the height achieved, the smoothness of the arch, and the cleanliness of the entry into the water. A well-executed swan dive demonstrates grace, control, and precision.
