Supreme Court Reports (Canada)
The Supreme Court Reports (Canada), officially abbreviated S.C.R., are the official law reports of the Supreme Court of Canada. They contain the full text of judgments rendered by the Court, including headnotes summarizing the key points of law addressed in each case. These reports are the authoritative source for citing Supreme Court of Canada decisions in legal proceedings and academic publications. The S.C.R. are published in both English and French.
The reports are published after judgments are finalized and edited, usually months after the initial oral judgment is rendered. Before the S.C.R. publication, decisions are available on the Supreme Court of Canada's website and through commercial legal databases. However, the citation to the S.C.R. becomes the primary citation for a decision once published.
The S.C.R. are organized chronologically by year and volume number. Each case is assigned a unique citation number within the volume. The citation format generally follows this pattern: Case Name, [Year] Volume S.C.R. Page Number. For example, Reference re Secession of Quebec, [1998] 2 S.C.R. 217.
The Canada Law Book company originally published the reports. The Supreme Court of Canada has since taken over the publication themselves.
