Sun Alliance (company)
Sun Alliance was a major British insurance company formed in 1959 through the merger of the Sun Insurance Office and the Alliance Assurance Company. Both parent companies had long and established histories, dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries respectively.
Sun Alliance provided a wide range of insurance products, including home, motor, and business insurance, as well as life assurance and pensions. The company operated both in the United Kingdom and internationally, with a significant presence in Europe, North America, and Australia.
In 1996, Sun Alliance merged with Royal Insurance to form Royal & Sun Alliance (RSA Insurance Group). This merger created one of the largest general insurers in the UK at the time. The Sun Alliance name ceased to be used as a trading name following the merger. The merger was intended to create significant cost savings and improve the combined group's market position. The legacy of Sun Alliance lives on within the history and operations of RSA Insurance Group, although the original branding is no longer in active use.
