Stefán Jónsson (handball)
Stefán Jónsson (born January 1, 1961) is an Icelandic former handball player and coach. He is widely considered one of the most significant figures in Icelandic handball history, both for his playing career and his coaching accomplishments.
As a player, Jónsson primarily played as a left back. He represented the Icelandic national handball team extensively, participating in multiple World Championships and Olympic Games, including the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Known for his powerful shot and tactical awareness, he was a key member of the national team for many years. He also played professionally for various clubs, including those in Germany.
Following his playing career, Jónsson transitioned to coaching. He coached several club teams in Iceland and abroad, achieving considerable success. He is most prominently known for his long and successful tenure as the head coach of the Icelandic national handball team, a position he held from 2001 to 2007 and again from 2008 to 2015. Under his leadership, Iceland achieved unprecedented success, including a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and a bronze medal at the 2010 European Championship. His tactical acumen and motivational skills were instrumental in shaping Iceland into a competitive force on the international stage. His contributions have significantly impacted the development of handball in Iceland.
