Aleksandr Mikhailov (astronomer)

Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Mikhailov (1888-1983) was a Soviet astronomer and a prominent figure in the development of Soviet astronomy. He specialized in astrometry, celestial mechanics, and the study of eclipses.

Mikhailov graduated from Moscow State University in 1911 and subsequently worked at the Pulkovo Observatory. His research included significant contributions to the determination of fundamental astronomical constants, improvements in the accuracy of astronomical coordinate systems, and the study of variations in latitude.

During World War II, the Pulkovo Observatory was severely damaged, and Mikhailov played a key role in its postwar restoration and rebuilding. He served as Director of the Pulkovo Observatory from 1947 to 1964.

Mikhailov authored several widely used textbooks and monographs on astronomy, including works on theoretical astronomy and practical astronomy. He also participated in numerous expeditions to observe solar eclipses, meticulously documenting and analyzing the data collected. His work significantly enhanced the understanding of the solar corona and the Earth's atmosphere.

His contributions were recognized with numerous awards and honors, reflecting his significant impact on the field of astronomy in the Soviet Union and internationally.
