Stareater (fish)
The Stareater, also known as the Blackdragon (though this name is often applied to multiple species), refers to any fish within the genus Astronesthes within the family Stomiidae. These are deep-sea ray-finned fishes characterized by their small size, elongated bodies, and bioluminescent photophores.
Astronesthes species are found in tropical and subtropical waters across the world's oceans. They typically inhabit the mesopelagic and bathypelagic zones, ranging from depths of around 200 meters to well over 1,000 meters.
A key characteristic of Stareaters is the presence of a barbel extending from their chin. This barbel is tipped with a light-producing photophore that is used to lure prey within striking distance. Their large mouths and sharp teeth are adapted for capturing small fish and invertebrates.
Different species of Astronesthes vary in size and morphology, but they share the general body plan and hunting strategy. They play an important role in the deep-sea food web, both as predators and as prey for larger animals. The taxonomy within the genus is complex and still subject to revision.
