Singaraja

Singaraja is a city located in northern Bali, Indonesia. It is the former capital of the province of Bali, having been replaced by Denpasar in 1958. Situated on the northern coast, Singaraja is the administrative centre of Buleleng Regency.

Historically, Singaraja played a significant role in Balinese history, particularly as a center of trade and administration under Dutch colonial rule. Its port, once a vital hub for shipping and commerce, connected Bali to the wider world. The city retains some colonial-era architecture.

Culturally, Singaraja is known for its distinct northern Balinese traditions, including its own dialect of Balinese and unique artistic expressions. The Gedong Kirtya Library, located in Singaraja, houses a collection of lontar manuscripts and other historical documents related to Balinese history, literature, and religion.

The name "Singaraja" translates roughly to "Lion King" in Balinese. The city is connected to other parts of Bali by road and serves as a base for exploring the northern region, including attractions like Lovina Beach (known for dolphin watching) and the Gitgit Waterfall.
