The primary functions of the Corps of Military Police include:

- Security: Providing security for Army installations, personnel, and sensitive materials.

The CMP is organized at various levels within the Indian Army, from headquarters to individual units. Military Police units are attached to formations and establishments across the country.
Training:
Personnel of the CMP undergo specialized training in military law, police procedures, investigation techniques, and other relevant skills. They are also trained in unarmed combat and the use of weapons for self-defense and maintaining order.
Distinctive Features:
The CMP is easily identifiable by its distinctive red beret, white lanyard, and MP armband. They also use marked vehicles for patrol and traffic control duties.
