Stara reka (Yantra)
Stara reka (Yantra) is a river in north-central Bulgaria. It is a major tributary of the Yantra River, and its name literally translates to "Old River" in Bulgarian, referencing the older, historically important river to which it contributes. The Stara reka originates in the Balkan Mountains, specifically from the slopes of Botev Peak, the highest peak in the mountain range. The river flows generally north, traversing several municipalities within Veliko Tarnovo Province.
Its course is characterized by deep canyons and gorges, especially in its upper reaches, making it a popular area for hiking and ecotourism. The river's waters are used for irrigation and, to a lesser extent, for hydroelectric power. The Stara reka valley is also known for its diverse flora and fauna. Settlements located along the river's banks often derive their livelihood from agriculture and tourism related to the natural beauty of the region.
