Sporran
A sporran is a traditional Scottish Gaelic pouch that performs the same function as pockets on the kilt. As kilts do not have pockets, the sporran serves as a necessary and functional accessory. It is typically made of leather or fur and is worn suspended from a chain or leather strap around the waist, hanging in front of the kilt.
The sporran's design and materials can vary widely, ranging from simple leather pouches to elaborate dress sporrans adorned with silver, sealskin, or other decorative elements. The type of sporran worn often depends on the formality of the occasion.
Historically, sporrans were used to carry coins, food, and other personal items. While their function has remained largely the same, modern sporrans may be adapted to hold wallets, phones, and other contemporary necessities. The sporran remains an integral part of Highland dress and a symbol of Scottish heritage.
