Speedway (1968 film)
Speedway is a 1968 American musical action film starring Elvis Presley and Nancy Sinatra. Directed by Norman Taurog, the film centers on race car driver Steve Grayson (Presley) who is deeply in debt to the IRS. Susan Jacks (Sinatra), an IRS tax assessor, is assigned to recover the owed money, leading to romantic complications.
The film features several musical numbers performed by Presley and Sinatra, including "Speedway", "Let Yourself Go", and "There Ain't Nothing Like A Song". The plot revolves around Steve's attempts to earn enough money to cover his debts while also helping orphans through charitable donations, often at his own financial expense. Susan, initially focused on her professional duty, gradually becomes sympathetic to Steve and the children he supports.
Speedway was one of Presley's later films, marking a shift away from some of the more serious dramatic roles he had previously undertaken and leaning more towards the musical-comedy format that was common during this period of his career. While not considered one of Presley's most critically acclaimed films, it remains a popular entry in his filmography for its musical numbers and lighthearted plot. The film also features a number of real-life NASCAR drivers in cameo roles, adding authenticity to the racing scenes.
