Southern region (Eritrea)

The Southern Region, also known as Debub Region (Tigrinya: ዞባ ደቡብ, Zoba Debub; Arabic: المنطقة الجنوبية), is one of the six administrative regions (Zobas) of Eritrea. It is situated in the southern part of the country, bordering the Central Region (Maekel) to the north, the Northern Red Sea Region (Semenawi Keyih Bahri) to the east, and Ethiopia to the south and west.

The capital and largest city of the Debub Region is Mendefera. Other significant towns include Adi Keyh, Adi Quala, Dekemhare, Segeneiti, and Senafe.

The Southern Region is characterized by its diverse topography, which includes highlands, plains, and semi-arid areas. Agriculture is a major economic activity, with crops such as cereals, fruits, and vegetables cultivated. Livestock raising is also prevalent.

The region is home to a diverse population with various ethnic groups, including Tigrinya speakers as the majority.

Historically, the Southern Region has been a significant area due to its proximity to the Eritrean-Ethiopian border and its role in the Eritrean struggle for independence. The area has seen significant conflict during periods of war and instability.

The administrative structure of the Debub Region consists of sub-zones (sub-regions), each with its own local administration. The regional administration is responsible for overseeing various aspects of governance, including education, healthcare, and infrastructure development.
